New Doctors Care Offers Convenient Services for USC, Shandon, Rosewood Residents

Columbia, S.C. – Doctors Care P.A., South Carolina’s largest urgent care company, held a ribbon-cutting today to celebrate the opening of its newest center in Columbia – the company’s 54th location in South Carolina.

Doctors Care Shandon, on the corner of Harden Street and Rosewood Drive, is conveniently located near many of Columbia downtown neighborhoods, several grade schools and the University of South Carolina. This is the 13th Doctors Care location in the central Midlands, and the fifth new location that Doctors Care has opened in less than a year.

Dr. Curtis Franke, acting president and chief medical officer of Doctors Care, said the new location was built to replace an outdated facility about a mile away, and strategically located to bring modern, affordable health care to the heart of Columbia’s downtown residential and university districts.

“This one is special for us – it’s in our own backyard,” Franke said. “We started in Columbia nearly four decades ago, and our headquarters are located just up Harden Street from here. We have treated generations of families in this area, and it gives us great pride to build this beautiful new facility to continue to serve even more generations and new families. We can see your family today, and we provide a great value and convenience in the health care space.”

As part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a check was presented to support the installation of public art and beautification projects along the retail corridor between the Shandon and Rosewood neighborhoods. One Columbia for Arts and History Executive Director Lee Snelgrove, and the Rosewood Merchants Association Executive Director Dave Britt, were on hand to accept the check.

“One Columbia is pleased to be a partner on yet another major public art project that brings a community-minded business in collaboration with a merchant’s association and neighborhood residents,” Snelgrove said.
According to Britt, the construction of Doctors Care Shandon also has inspired renewed interested in investment and property enhancements.

“The Rosewood Merchants Association is excited to welcome Doctors Care to the neighborhood, and appreciates the gracious donation toward art and beautification,” Britt said. “They are creating a great partnership between their business and the community with a gesture that is truly outstanding, exciting and unique. These future projects will be an awesome addition to one of Columbia’s most unique and beloved areas.”

Doctors Care Shandon is more than 4,300 square feet, with eight exam rooms plus trauma space, on-site laboratory and X-ray rooms, and spacious accommodations with modern finishes.

Services available at this Doctors Care include:

  • Online check-in, plus virtual visits at DoctorsCare.com/Anywhere
  • Urgent care, minor procedures (including sprains, fractures, lacerations and burns)
  • Family care (children’s physicals, X-rays, blood work and colds/strep/flu care, etc.)
  • Vaccinations (including tetanus, flu, pneumonia, hepatitis B)
  • College student discounts

Tuesday 9/12, 10 a.m. update:

All evacuation orders have been lifted for barrier islands as of 10 a.m. this morning by the South Carolina Governor. At this point, our Bluffton and Hilton Head Island locations will remain closed until further notice while conditions are assessed, and our Beaufort location is open today until 6pm. Please check back here for updated information, or call our toll free number before you decide to come (888-843-3719). Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected communities across the South this week.

By Hurricane Irma

Monday 9/11, 3 p.m. update:

Out of an abundance of caution for our employees and patients, we are closing all of our locations at 6 p.m. tonight to allow for safe travel home. We anticipate full hours of operations for nearly all locations tomorrow, with the exception of a few Lowcountry centers. Per the current evacuation orders still in place by Governor McMaster for Jasper, Beaufort and Colleton Counties, our Hilton Head Island, Beaufort and Bluffton locations will remain closed until further notice. Please check back here for updated information, or call our toll free number before you decide to visit one of our locations (888-843-3719).  Stay safe out there!

By Hurricane Irma

Sunday 9/10, 3 p.m. update:

After discussing with management teams, we will be closing the entire Lowcountry region on Monday, September 11th. Sustained winds of 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, 5-8 inches of rain, and tornado warnings have led to concern for the safety of staff travel.

All offices will have regular hours Tuesday, with the exception of Hilton Head, which will remain closed (island closed until 10 am on Tuesday). Beaufort may have abbreviated hours, and Bluffton may close due to provider shortage.

By Hurricane Irma

Saturday 9/9, 8 p.m. update:

Per Governor McMaster’s order of mandatory evacuation, our clinics in Hilton Head, Beaufort and Bluffton will be closed on Saturday, 9/9, and Sunday, 9/10. Additional closings could be announced or prolonged.

Please keep your families safe and communicate with your local operations team regarding closures. This situation could change at any time. If weather or traffic conditions make it unsafe for you to get to work, please stay home or in a safe place, and notify your operations and management teams (UCI staff please communicate with your center managers and ROMs, providers please communicate with your RMDs). A large risk still exists for significant travel/traffic issues in the Lowcountry.  If we are able to do so, we will safely open to serve the communities in which we operate.

Through Telemedicine, Doctors Care Reaches Patients in Every SC County

By News

Columbia, SC – Doctors Care urgent care, founded in Columbia in 1981 as South Carolina’s first urgent care organization, has now seen patients in every county in the state with its telemedicine platform, Doctors Care Anywhere. Providers have completed nearly one-thousand visits with the online app, and nearly 6,000 visits using in-center telemedicine technology.

Doctors Care first launched its telehealth program in 2014, the same year it added online check-in to all of its walk-in clinics across the state. The Doctors Care Anywhere platform, rolled-out in early 2016, was built in-house using local developers. The app allows patients to connect with a Doctors Care physician using a smartphone, tablet or computer – providing an unparalleled level of convenience and access for patients, allowing them to see its providers from the comfort of their home or office. The Doctors Care Anywhere app is available to download for both Apple and Android devices.

“We’ve been a trusted brand in this state for 35 years, and we continue to build new urgent care locations to meet growing population demands,” said Dr. Thomas Gibbons, president of Doctors Care. “Our telemedicine platform was created to offer an additional way for patients to use our services – for those interested in this type of technology and convenience. Convenience is king, and we get it.”

Another priority of the Doctors Care leadership is bringing quality health care to underserved citizens located in rural areas around the state.

“We have many counties with little or no accessible health care available to much of their population,” said David Boucher, president of UCI Medical Affiliates, the non-medical management company of Doctors Care.

“Our goal was twofold: First, to add a new level of convenience for our existing, loyal patients. Second, to provide access to people who don’t have a good option nearby or who may be homebound. We believe all our citizens should have access to quality health care, and this is one way we can be a part of the solution.”

Since launching the telemedicine platform in early 2016, Doctors Care has served nearly one thousand patients, from all 46 counties in South Carolina. Physicians are able to treat a variety of non-complex illnesses, from colds and sinus infections to skin rashes and ear infections.

“Our telemedicine physicians are able to see, speak and interact with patients using highly secure connections to make diagnoses,” Gibbons said. “A major advantage we have over national telemedicine providers is we can refer complex or questionable cases to one of our 52 free-standing locations around the state. This is a continuum of care that differentiates Doctors Care from all of our primary care and urgent care competitors in South Carolina.”
